"My body, my choice" is not a valid argument for abortion.
First things first, I am pro-choice. I think we don't need more kids born to parents that aren't ready to have families because families are the most basic unit of a nation, and when families are unstable it has a negative impact on the whole nation. Additionally, I think rights are assigned and are not innate, so assigning rights to a baby in the womb is not necessary.
That being said, I'm tired of pro-choice individuals trotting out the same old argument "my body, my choice." These people usually go on to say that someone who believes in limited government and is pro-life is a hypocrite because "the government shouldn't tell a woman what to do with her own body." The problem with this argument is that the government has to tell people what to do with their own bodies. Laws against trespassing are an obvious example of this. The government telling you that you can't go on private property without permission is in effect telling you what to do with your body. It is telling you that you can't take your two legs and walk on private property. Legs are part of your body. Additionally, laws against assault are in effect prohibitions on using one's body to hit someone else. The essence of the pro-life position is that the baby growing in the womb is inside a woman's body but not identical with a woman's body. The idea is that the baby has rights of it's own and has it's own body. I think the idea that the baby has innate rights is false as I've already stated, but what I'm saying is that idea should be attacked head-on instead of throwing out some platitude and slogan (my body, my choice) that doesn't address the issue at hand.
